Currently, my students are learning about fractions (well, I guess I should say were learning about fractions before the two week break due to #coronavirus). Students have been learning about simple fractions, fractions on a number line and equivalent fractions. So, I created a small class transformation which required our class to become a small paint and sip session.
In this #PaintandSip, students were required to create a flag that followed a set of rules. These rules made students decompose the flag into sections and then paint certain parts. Afterwards, students answered questions that required them to identify simple fractions and even equivalent fractions.
Clearly the best part of the activity was painting for the students because by the time we got to determining unit fractions and equivalent fractions, students began to tap out. Although some students found it challenging, a few of them were able to determine simple unit fractions and equivalent fractions. So of course we worked on the activity another day (not the entire transformation), but felt the need to work on it again to break it down further for students.
To help create the art mood, my colleagues and I supplied a few things for the little artists:
Paint, Aprons and Brushes: supplied by colleagues
Flowers: Dollar Tree
Canvases: Dollar Tree
Music (which you clearly can't hear): Artsy music on YouTube
